Message from the CEO

T echnology has indeed progressed over the years. Today, we can accomplish a number of
tasks much faster than we were able to do back then. Various applications (apps) enable us
to interact with others in real time even if they are located halfway around the world. We are able
to easily translate other languages and eventually learn it in the process. There’s also an abun-
dance of apps that remember details for us so we don’t have to waste our precious time. Even
cars feature sophisticated diagnostic systems that alert drivers when a malfunction is detected,
which indeed improve the overall driving experience. Google’s self-driving car is also changing the
whole gamut of car technology. These are just few examples on how innovation has changed the
way we do things, as technology keeps evolving and adding new trends in the list.
In the early days of internet, innovators from Silicon Valley had a simple objective – to make the
world better connected. However, little did they know that while technology was bringing new op-
portunities, it also posed a genesis of threats, eventually opening a can of worms.
One of the indirect commercial repercussions of a fast changing technology is the cost of infra-
structure upgrade. Companies are left with no choice but to cope up with the ever-changing tech-
nological evolution. The cost of maintaining and constant system upgrading takes a huge part of
expenditures.
Another ugly truth that innovation brings is the widespread availability of information on the in-
ternet, causing companies to suffer. Since consumers can right away search for operations’ and
market conditions, this makes the competition very tight and ultimately kills business’ margins.
Given this situation, companies need to work longer and harder to do more quantity just to earn
the same like before.
Privacy is another alarming issue of technology. The rise of cloud computing leaves the window wide-open to hackers to access information, which
creates a domino effect to companies’ now requiring advanced anti-virus and reliable data security, causing an added expense to business opera-
tions.
Another challenge that we face with technology is the maintenance and backup of accumulating data. The amount of data being used before com-
pared today is innumerable. Big files need big storage, data backup, and recovery solutions at hand. The cost of keeping files secure requires huge
financial investment.
While technology presented a list of advantages, it also contributed mainly to multiple detriments towards companies. It has given us sophistication
and unprecedented approach of doing business, but has it really given us comfort?
